Saint Clare of Assisi was a remarkable woman who became the role model and patroness of the Poor Clare Sisters throughout the world.
She was inspired by the preaching and example of St. Francis of Assisi. Clare, whose name means light, determined to leave her life of privilege to observe the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, in poverty. She lived in obedience, without anything of her own and in chastity.
Clare wrote a form of life or a Rule for the Poor Ladies (later known as the Poor Clare Sisters). This was the first Rule written by a woman and approved by the Vatican.
Poor Clares Omaha History
The Poor Clare Sisters headed by Mother Mary Magdalen Bentivoglio arrived in August 15, 1878. This was the first Poor Clare foundation in North America. Since 1971, the Poor Clare Monastery has been located at St. Benard's parish. It remains a house of prayer, a place of modest living and peaceful surroundings.
In 2003, the Poor Clare Sisters celebrated the 125th Anniversary of the establishment of the foundation.
In 2005, the centennial of the death of Mother Mary Magdalen Bentivoglio, OSC was marked through the whole year celebration. She passed away on August 18, 1905 in Evansville, Indiana.
Presently, the new monastery building project, located at Mt. Michael Abbey, is well underway. The Benedictines and Poor Clare Sisters signed a lease on March 5, 2007.
